How Do Shopify Fees Work?

Every Shopify bill is made of the same four parts. The plan fee stays the same each month, while card fees grow with every sale. For most stores, card fees are by far the biggest part.

Shopify Pricing Plans 2026 by Country

Shopify pricing has two parts: the monthly plan fee, and a card fee on every sale. Both depend on your plan and your country. Paying yearly lowers the plan price: by about 25% in the UK, Canada and Australia, and by 10% to 26% in the US, depending on the plan.

New stores get a 3-day free trial. After that, most plans cost $1 (or £1, CA$1, A$1) a month for the first 3 months. All prices below are per month.

Card rates are for Shopify Payments with local online cards, as of October 2026. International cards and Amex cost more. Prices can change, so check Shopify’s pricing page for your country before you sign up. If you use a payment provider other than Shopify Payments, Shopify adds a fee in every country: 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus.

How Much Does Shopify Take per Sale?

On each online card payment, Shopify takes a percentage of the order plus a small fixed fee. Here’s how that works for a $50 order on the US Basic plan:

US Basic plan with Shopify Payments. Your plan and country change the card rate and fixed fee.

Using a different payment provider changes the total. Here’s the same $50 order both ways:

With Shopify Payments

US Basic plan: 2.9% + 30¢

Card processing ($50 × 2.9%)
$1.45
Fixed fee
$0.30
Shopify transaction fee
$0.00
Shopify takes
$1.75

With a Third-Party Provider

Provider at 2.9% + 30¢, plus Shopify's 2% on Basic

Provider processing fee
$1.75
Shopify transaction fee ($50 × 2%)
$1.00
Total fees
$2.75

That extra dollar adds up. At 1,000 orders a month, it’s $1,000. That’s why Shopify Payments is usually cheaper.

Shopify Basic vs Grow vs Advanced: When to Upgrade

Higher plans cost more each month but charge lower card fees. Once you sell enough, the higher plan works out cheaper.

Cheapest US Plan by Monthly Sales (Yearly Billing, Shopify Payments)
  1. BasicUp to $30,000 a monthSwitch at $30,000
  2. Grow$30,000 to $135,000Switch at $135,000
  3. AdvancedOver $135,000 a month

The switch points for each country, by how you pay for your plan:

Yearly Billing

Country Basic → Grow Grow → Advanced
US $30,000 $135,000
UK £10,000 £105,000
Canada CA$31,000 CA$145,000
Australia A$48,000 A$158,500

Monthly Billing

Country Basic → Grow Grow → Advanced
US $33,000 $147,000
UK £13,333 £139,500
Canada CA$41,500 CA$192,500
Australia A$62,000 A$213,000

In the UK, Grow pays off much sooner, at £10,000 a month. The UK plan prices are closer together, and the card rate drops more from Basic to Grow.

Fees grow with sales, so getting more sales from the same visitors makes them matter less. You can check yours with our conversion rate calculator.

Shopify Transaction Fees: Shopify Payments vs Third-Party Providers

Usually cheaper

Shopify Payments

  • Card rates set by your Shopify plan
  • No extra Shopify transaction fee
  • Payouts, refunds and disputes in your Shopify admin
  • Available in the US, UK, Canada and Australia

Third-Party Payment Provider

  • The provider (for example PayPal or Stripe) charges its own processing fees
  • Shopify adds 2% on Basic, 1% on Grow, 0.6% on Advanced and 0.2% on Plus
  • Useful when you need a provider Shopify Payments doesn’t support
  • Payouts and disputes are handled in the provider’s dashboard

If Shopify Payments is your main provider, you can also offer PayPal at checkout, and Shopify doesn’t add its extra fee to those PayPal orders. Shopify explains the details in its guide to third-party payment providers.

Other Shopify Costs to Budget For

The plan isn’t the only cost. Most stores also pay for some of these:

Paid Apps

Monthly fees for reviews, email marketing, subscriptions and more. For many stores, this is the biggest extra cost.

A one-time purchase from the Shopify Theme Store. For a design no other store has, consider custom theme development.

Custom Domain

A yearly fee for your own domain name.

Currency Conversion

An extra fee when you sell in other currencies.

Chargebacks

A fee each time a customer disputes a payment with their bank.

POS Pro

For selling in person: US$89 a month per location in the US.

How Much Does It Cost to Build a Shopify Store?

Building your store is a separate cost from the plan. It depends on who builds it:

Do It Yourself

Good for: simple catalogs and testing an idea.

You pay for: a theme, apps and your own time.

Freelancer

Good for: theme setup and small changes.

You pay for: hourly or per-project work. Quality and availability vary.

Shopify Agency

Good for: custom design, migrations, apps and Shopify Plus.

You pay for: a team that plans, builds and looks after your store, like Uptek.
